The PayPal 21-day hold — and how to release it early

5 min read · Not legal advice

PayPal's standard payment hold lasts up to 21 days. It exists to cover refunds if something goes wrong — and critically, it releases early when the risk goes away: add tracking and the payment typically releases about a day after confirmed delivery, or the buyer can confirm receipt and release it manually.

The early-release checklist

1) Attach valid tracking to every held transaction — this is the single highest-leverage action. 2) Mark orders shipped promptly and keep tracking statuses accurate. 3) Ask satisfied buyers (politely, once) to confirm receipt. 4) Keep dispute rates low; holds are triggered heavily by dispute history and sudden sales spikes.

When the hold doesn't lift

If a hold persists past delivery confirmation, or your whole balance is pinned by an account-level review, you're in escalation territory: request the hold reason per transaction in writing, escalate to business support with your seller records, and use the formal demand letter if silence continues. If PayPal limits or closes your account, the PayPal User Agreement provides a 180-day wait before remaining funds can be withdrawn — calendar it, and demand the exact end date in writing.

Verify current terms in the PayPal User Agreement (paypal.com/us/legalhub) and Help Center before acting. Not legal advice.
